MODERN JAPANESE LOFT
Residential
Problem to design a loft for a family that has recently moved from Japan to Vancouver and would like to keep their cultural values in mind throughout the design process.

Concept to create a modern take on a traditional Japanese home using architectural elements and the layout from traditional design will be utilized to create a sense of familiarity to help promote a fresh start.

Process the floorplan of a traditional Japanese house was analysed to allow us to understand the different architectural elements. Spaces such as genkan/entrances and engawas from traditional homes were interpreted in a more modern way to be included within the space. Japanese architecture placed huge importance on having a connection to nature whether it was through the usage of natural materials such as wood or through having indoor-outdoor spaces which were utilized greatly throughout this space.
